The City of Zurich has a public transport network that is both dense and extensive. Almost anywhere in the city – and the entire canton beyond the city’s boundaries – is easily accessible by bus, tram, the S-Bahn train services or boat.
In the city itself, you’ll find public transport stops roughly every 300 meters. Displays at these stops show timetable information, the next connections, and the zone map. Most also have a ticket machine.
The Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (ZVV) is the public transport association for the Canton of Zurich and some of its neighboring areas. It is made up of individual passenger transport companies within a common fare structure.
The zone map shows the fare zones for the area covered by the ZVV. The City of Zurich is in zone 10, which is counted double where fare calculation is concerned because of its size. A network ticket enables you to travel on all means of transport within the zones and the time for which your ticket is valid.
The SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) is the backbone of the public transport system in Switzerland, and the nation’s largest travel and transport company.
More than a quarter of all Swiss residents have a half-fare travelcard ("Halbtax") that allows them to travel half-price on all SBB routes and most of those operated by other transport companies, as well as on buses and trams throughout Switzerland.
